Microsoft Patents System to Pause Games and Show Ads at Natural Break Points
A newly published patent describes how Microsoft could interrupt PC and console games with ads at moments like level completions and boss defeats, rewarding players with ad-free time for watching commercials.
Microsoft has filed a patent for an in-game advertising system designed to pause games at natural break points and display promotional content, then reward players with additional ad-free playtime for watching.
The patent, titled "Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access" and published as US 2026/0260258 A1 on September 3, the United States Patent & Trademark Office, outlines methods for delivering ads without disrupting active gameplay. According to the filing, players would receive an initial stretch of ad-free access, either set by time (such as 30 minutes) or tied to progress like finishing a full level.
Rather than interrupting immediately, the system would wait for suitable pause points. The patent lists examples including the end of a boss fight, a completed quest, the end of a cutscene, and loading screens. When these moments occur, the game would signal a content management system to pause the player's session, display promotional audio or video content, and resume once the ad finishes.
The system rewards ad-watching with credits that delay subsequent ads. According to the patent, players could accumulate credits over time and potentially view additional promotional content to earn more credits, effectively gamifying the ad consumption experience.
The patent describes using machine learning to refine ad timing based on game-engine data. The system could identify user interface notifications, detect in-game events like health bars changing or damage taken through texture model changes, and learn to avoid interruptions during "rare events" or what the patent calls "points of excitement and/or curiosity."
The filing notes the system aims to avoid a "negative use experience" and could distinguish between moments when ads would be least disruptive, such as recognizing that trees in Call of Duty look different from trees in Fortnite. It may also identify popular moments like legendary loot drops or successful parries in fighting games to avoid interrupting those sequences.
A patent application does not guarantee the technology will be implemented. Neither outfit reporting on the filing identified confirmation that the system has been built into any released game or Xbox service. Microsoft has previously trialled ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming and stated that ads should not "interrupt the flow of gameplay."
The company's broader push toward advertising-supported gaming reflects industry interest in monetizing free-to-play experiences beyond traditional free-to-play mobile models, which already use ads between levels or after failed attempts.
