Microsoft's attempt to sell Ninja Theory to a third-party buyer has collapsed, with two separate acquisition deals falling through. The studio now faces proposed closure as part of Microsoft's 2024 restructuring, which has affected multiple gaming divisions.

The timing compounds an earlier decision by Microsoft to promote Ninja Theory's upcoming game, Senua's Saga, at Summer Game Fest in June. The trailer showcased ray-traced combat footage and announced day-one availability on Game Pass. According to reports, Microsoft's primary motivation for the reveal was to attract potential buyers for the studio.

Xbox executive Matt Booty publicly addressed the failed acquisition attempts in brief remarks, dedicating approximately two sentences to explain how the deals had collapsed and trigger the studio's proposed closure. The announcement drew criticism for the minimal attention given to the outcome.

The sequence of events raises questions about Microsoft's decision-making. If the company knew it intended to sell Ninja Theory before the Summer Game Fest reveal, promoting an unfinished game under those circumstances appears strategically questionable. Conversely, if Microsoft did not anticipate needing to divest the studio, the revelation suggests a rapid and unforeseen change in corporate strategy.

Ninja Theory is among five studios affected by Microsoft's 2024 layoffs and closures, alongside Double Fine, Arkane, Undead Labs, and Compulsion Games. The studio, which has won multiple BAFTA awards, will become the first studio directly affected by Microsoft's restructuring to close outright if the proposed closure proceeds.

The collapse of the acquisition attempts leaves the Senua reveal without a clear strategic benefit for either Microsoft or Ninja Theory's future prospects.
