Metal Gear Solid 4 Port References Fan Preservation Project SaveMGO
Files in Metal Gear Solid 4's new re-release within Master Collection Vol 2 contain references to the fan-made SaveMGO project, highlighting the importance of fan preservation.
References to the fan preservation project SaveMGO have been discovered inside the executable files of Metal Gear Solid 4's new port featured in the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 2. The discovery was brought to light through the SaveMGO Twitter account, which shared reactions from community member Marko regarding strings found in the game files.
While official confirmation is lacking, fans theorize that Konami may have utilized SaveMGO to access deleted downloadable content for the game, which originally consisted of camouflage patterns for Snake. Marko noted the preservation potential of the project, stating that it may be the primary reason the original content remains accessible today. The original Metal Gear Online 2, which launched with Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PlayStation 3, went offline in 2012, though the SaveMGO project has since allowed players to continue playing the multiplayer experience.
Although Konami did not include the multiplayer mode directly in the Master Collection Vol 2 release, the presence of these file strings highlights the significant role played by uncelebrated fan-made preservation projects in keeping gaming history alive over a decade after official servers are shut down.
