Melty Blood: Twi-Lumina adds accessibility-focused Act Mode and 20-hour story by Kinoko Nasu
The upcoming fighting game introduces simplified controls with auto-combos, a new Lumina Gauge system, and a substantial story mode written by the Tsukihime creator. French-Bread showed the game at Tokyo Game Show 2026 ahead of its April release.

Melty Blood: Twi-Lumina is bringing significant new features to the long-running TYPE-MOON fighting game series. French-Bread revealed the latest build at Tokyo Game Show 2026, showcasing system changes and a story mode that represents a major departure for the franchise.
The most visible addition is Act Mode, a new input system designed to lower the technical barrier for new players. Traditional controls have been renamed Duel Mode. Act Mode simplifies special moves through one-button inputs combined with directional holds. For example, a quarter-circle-forward motion can be performed by pressing the special-move button while holding neutral. However, this convenience comes with a cost: one-button special moves deal approximately 10 percent less damage than their traditional command equivalents, according to the in-game combo display shown in the demo.
The auto-combo system, called Rapid Beat, has been significantly expanded in Act Mode. Players can now access three variants by repeatedly pressing A, B, or C buttons. The A-button version performs an aerial combo and air throw, matching the original game's behavior. The B-button variant routes into Gauntlet, a new rushing overhead attack with armor that extends combos when used mid-sequence. The C-button version leads into Arc Drives, the game's super moves. Players can switch between Rapid Beat types mid-combo, allowing tactical decisions like confirming a low attack, extending with Gauntlet loops, and finishing with a super.
Managing resources is central to Twi-Lumina's combat. The new Lumina Gauge replaces the Moon Gauge from Type Lumina, displayed as connected stars beneath the health bar. The gauge fills through specific actions and empties when using powerful mechanics. When the gauge is completely depleted, the player enters a break state, preventing Lumina-consuming actions and increasing incoming damage. The gauge decreases when landing attacks, particularly Arc Drives. Moon Drive skills remain in the game and are among the actions that replenish the Lumina Gauge.
Gauntlet functions as both a defensive and offensive tool. Activated by pressing A+C simultaneously, it provides armor from startup, allowing players to absorb opponent attacks and counter. Landing Gauntlet near the corner causes a wall splat leading into extended combos. Unlike Street Fighter 6's Drive Impact, which it resembles, Gauntlet cannot combo on hit in the middle of the screen and can be blocked despite being an overhead attack. Its combo-extending version, usable mid-sequence, launches opponents with extended untechable time at the cost of Lumina Gauge.
The 15-minute demo session allowed limited exploration of system depth. The new character Len was playable, and existing characters received adjustments including additional special moves for Shiki and changes allowing certain specials without Arc Drive consumption. French-Bread noted that specifications may change before the final release.
Grand Scenario Mode represents the game's most ambitious addition. This story mode features a scenario newly written by Kinoko Nasu, the creator of Tsukihime. The mode blends visual-novel segments with adventure-game sections, mixing full-screen text, character sprites, and pixel-art scenes. Battles integrate into the narrative based on story progression and player choices. Some encounters feature dedicated characters with exclusive Grand Scenario Mode abilities. The complete story reportedly contains approximately 20 hours of playtime, an unusual volume for a fighting game's accompanying mode.
During a developer Q&A, director Kamone Serizawa of French-Bread explained the reasoning behind this substantial story focus. "The Melty Blood series has been around for a long time, so the foundation of the game itself is well established. We also have plenty of experience, and we're confident that we can make a fighting game that is properly entertaining every time," Serizawa said. "However, if that is all we offer, ultimately, only existing fans and fighting game fans will play it. One of the major appeals of the TYPE-MOON brand is the scenarios," suggesting the studio sought to leverage the franchise's narrative strengths to reach players beyond the fighting game community.
Melty Blood: Twi-Lumina launches in April for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
