Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Receives Surprise Update as Nintendo Positions Mario Kart World to Coexist Alongside It
A surprise update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe brings new features and Nintendo Switch 2 support, showing that Nintendo intends for the older game to coexist with Mario Kart World rather than be replaced by it.

Nintendo recently rolled out a surprising new update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The game has moved over 70 million copies and sold an additional 490,000 copies in the past quarter, cementing its status as Nintendo's best-selling game of all time. When players open the newly updated game on a Nintendo Switch 1, a message informs them that the title now supports 8-player split-screen multiplayer on Switch 2 hardware.
The shadow-dropped update adds several technical improvements and features to the game. It natively supports Nintendo Switch 2 displays and high-resolution televisions. Load times are significantly faster, operating nearly three times faster on the newer console with title screens loading almost instantly. Additionally, every character has been sped up by the equivalent of one additional coin, requiring world record time trials to be set again. The Boo item has also been updated to work like Mario Kart World, allowing players to maintain top speed while driving off-road.
Releasing these changes for an older title indicates that Nintendo is happy to let Mario Kart 8 Deluxe coexist alongside Mario Kart World as two separate branches of the same franchise. Rather than serving as a direct replacement, Mario Kart World was designed to stand alongside the previous entry as a unique take on the series. The two games offer distinct racing experiences, allowing players to choose based on their preferences. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe appeals to fans who prefer traditional course racing over open world mechanics and features a staggering number of courses thanks to the Booster Course Pass.
Meanwhile, Mario Kart World has already sold over 15 million copies. By maintaining both titles, Nintendo can continue selling copies of each game while focusing future content efforts on Mario Kart World. This release strategy hints at how Nintendo might handle future entries for heavy-hitting franchises on Nintendo Switch 2, such as Animal Crossing and Super Smash Bros., where older evergreen predecessors could remain playable and continue selling alongside new releases.
