LEC drops Versus format, returns to 10-team winter structure in 2027

LEC Commissioner Artem Bykov has confirmed that LEC Versus will not return in 2027, with the league reverting to its classic 10-team winter format. Bykov made the confirmation in an interview with Sheep Esports at the LEC 2026 Summer Finals in Nice, France, on September 19.

LEC Versus launched in 2026 as a winter tournament that folded two Tier 2 EMEA Regional League sides into competition alongside the ten LEC partner organizations. It marked the first time since 2019 that ERL teams faced LEC opposition on the top stage. The 2026 run will be the format's only edition.

The 2026 Versus field consisted of 10 LEC partner organizations plus Karmine Corp Blue and Los Ratones, competing in a 12-team single round-robin group stage followed by a top-eight double-elimination bracket. G2 Esports defeated Karmine Corp 3-2 in the grand final. The tournament drew 734,933 peak viewers and 33.8 million hours watched according to Esports Charts. However, playoff peak viewership fell 33 percent to 397,000 after Los Ratones, the influencer-led roster fronted by Marc "Caedrel" Lamont, was knocked out on the final group-stage day. Los Ratones has since disbanded.

Despite the lower playoff numbers, Versus logged more total watch time than only three tournaments in LEC history. Bykov said another ERL route into the LEC isn't currently planned for 2027, pointing instead to outside organizers developing Tier 2 competition independently, including the newly announced World Star Challengers Invitational.

The league's 2027 focus is on refining the core LEC calendar with the 10-team winter structure restored. Bykov did not rule out revisiting Tier 2 integration at some point, though no such plan was confirmed for next year.
