The Last of Us Director Bruce Straley Says AAA Games Have Become 'Boring'

Bruce Straley, the former Naughty Dog game director behind The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, has criticized the creative direction of modern AAA games in an interview with Edge magazine.

Straley spent 18 years at Naughty Dog before departing in 2017. Speaking in Edge's issue 428, he described the experiences delivered by triple-A studios as uninspired. "I think the verbs and experiences we're delivering in the triple-A space are... I wanna say boring," Straley said. "Just, across the board in triple-A, it feels like there's no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas."

Straley used Sony Santa Monica's upcoming God of War Laufey as a specific example. While acknowledging the technical achievement of the game, he expressed disappointment with its gameplay direction. "God of War Laufey, I look at that game, and every pixel is mindblowing. The amount of work and skill that's gone into every single frame... I've made those kinds of games, and I'm still blown away. But when I actually look at what you're doing in the game? I'm not excited. And that's nothing against the God of War team," he explained.

Straley attributes the industry's creative conservatism to financial pressures. AAA games require such substantial budgets that publishers prioritize broad appeal and proven formulas over experimentation. The result, he argues, is a landscape where risk-taking has become rare.

Since leaving Naughty Dog, Straley founded Wildflower Interactive in 2022. The studio is developing Coven of the Chicken Foot, a puzzle-platformer unveiled at The Game Awards in December 2025. The game, confirmed for PC, represents the opposite of AAA convention: players control an old witch rather than a heroic protagonist, move slowly through semi-open environments, and encounter none of the visual polish or narrative grandeur typical of blockbuster releases.

Straley has acknowledged that he holds ideas for AAA games he would likely never develop under current industry conditions. "I will probably never make it," he said of one concept. His departure from Naughty Dog, he previously explained, stemmed from a desire for "new problems to solve" and the chance to build intellectual property independently rather than contributing to someone else's franchise.
