Kingdom Hearts 4 Reveals Playable Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald

Kingdom Hearts 4's latest trailer showcases playable King Mickey sections and chaos in Quadratum, with a release window set for late 2027.

At the recent D23 event, Square Enix released an extended trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, revealing new gameplay footage starring Mickey Mouse, Donald, and Goofy. The trailer showcases Mickey's unique puzzle-based gameplay, which involves transforming into a 2D paper cutout and a hulking origami to move around and solve puzzles.

According to Kingdom Hearts 4 co-director Tai Yasue, Mickey's sections employ a "sort of puzzle-based game design that's very different from Sora's adventure, and I think it's really refreshing and interesting." The gameplay involves recreating origami paper copies of Mickey, which can be used to solve puzzles and navigate through the environment.

The trailer also features footage of Donald and Goofy, who are playable for the first time in the series. The two characters can be seen fighting Heartless, sliding down slopes, and unleashing their own team-up attacks. The trailer also showcases the game's realistic world, Quadrantum, and the return of the Underworld from Hercules.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is set to release in late 2027 for PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. The game's director, Tetsuya Nomura, has reaffirmed that the game is on track for its scheduled release window, dispelling rumors of a potential delay.

In addition to the gameplay trailer, it was also announced that a Kingdom Hearts anime is in the works, with Tetsuya Nomura and the Kingdom Hearts team involved in the project. The anime will be released on Disney+ and the Disney Channel at a later date.
