Kernel Hearts Blends Action RPG and Roguelike Design with Multiplayer Co-op

Kernel Hearts, an action RPG developed by Ephemera Games, is now available on Xbox. The game combines two distinct design philosophies: the epic narratives of long-form JRPGs and the structured, replayable runs of roguelikes, creating something that fits into shorter play sessions without sacrificing story depth.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic Patagonia where a collapsed world struggles to rebuild. Players control the M.A.H.O.U Unit, a squad of four magical girls tasked with climbing the Tower of Babel, eliminating angelic creatures and ultimately dethroning God to save humanity from destruction. The narrative and setting reflect the cultural backgrounds of the development team, blending Japanese influences in art, story, and language with Argentine culture throughout the design.
Akira, the game's director, explained the design philosophy behind the four main characters. "A character shouldn't just have a different weapon. You should be able to watch a few seconds of gameplay and immediately understand something about their personality. Their animations, silhouettes, magic, movement, and even the rhythm of their attacks all have to tell you who that person is." Each character embodies distinct combat styles: Fernet uses swords and spirits for versatility, Spika wields a katana with disciplined strikes, Laika carries a massive sword for heavy attacks, and Dolce incorporates dance and performance into her fighting style.
The game is completable solo, though it supports up to four players in co-op multiplayer. The developers emphasized that while the story centers on a squad working together, both single-player and multiplayer experiences offer the full narrative. After each expedition, players return to a laboratory where they spend rewards to unlock and equip chips onto their Unit MAHOU.OS, customizing their abilities across runs.
Combat emphasizes mix-and-match mechanics, allowing players to combine attacks, spells, and movement powers to create devastating combos. Each level culminates in a boss fight against the domain's guardian. A special transformation mechanic lets players harness tower strength to dispel the Heavenly Curse, entering a powerful true form temporarily. Outside combat, players can interact with tower inhabitants and give them gifts to deepen bonds.
Kernel Hearts represents nearly six years of development by Ephemera Games and Whitethorn Games. The project began as a rough concept during a game jam in 2020, eventually evolving into the finished title.
