Japan's mobile games market generates $10 billion despite download decline
Japan's mobile game market generated over $10 billion in IAP revenue over the past 12 months, though downloads fell 5.4% year-over-year. eFootball became the highest-grossing title, while puzzle games dominated downloads.

Japan's mobile gaming market remains a revenue powerhouse despite a cooling in new player acquisition. The region generated more than $10 billion in mobile game in-app purchase revenue over the past 12 months, though this represented a 5.1% year-over-year decline according to Sensor Tower's Japan Gaming 2026 report.
Mobile game downloads totaled 585 million during the period, down 5.4% year-over-year and ranking ninth across Asia. The disconnect between revenue and download rankings reflects a mature market where growth depends on player spending and engagement rather than volume. Players spent approximately 16.7 billion hours in mobile games, with engagement remaining relatively stable since 2024.
Konami's eFootball climbed six positions to become Japan's highest-grossing mobile game from January through July 2026, with revenue reaching an all-time monthly high in July. World Cup-related activities drove engagement and spending. Monster Strike and Last War: Survival ranked second and third for IAP revenue, followed by Whiteout Survival and Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
Block Blast! held the top position for downloads, with hololive Dreams debuting in second place. Puzzle games led all download categories, with puzzle sort games accounting for 45.8% of puzzle downloads. New releases including Arknights: Endfield, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, Heartopia and NTE: Neverness to Everness recorded notable growth.
Revenue concentrated in deeper experiences, with 4X strategy leading all mobile subgenres and growing 9.4% year-over-year. Turn-based and squad RPGs remained major spending categories. Japan continued to earn more than double South Korea's games IAP revenue and nearly four times Taiwan's, ranking second in Asia behind only China's iOS market.
