Griffin Gaming Partners co-founder and prominent collector Peter Levin recently spoke about the enduring global popularity of the Pokemon franchise. Levin stated that if the world suffered an apocalypse, Pokemon cards would become the new global currency the following day. He noted that Pokemon cards are beating the S&P 500 by 3,000 percent and described the franchise as a global phenomenon on a parabolic growth curve.

Levin highlighted the sustained popularity of the video games, card games, and collectibles that have endured for more than three decades. The franchise gained significant international traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s. High collector value has also led to brazen retail robberies and illicit activities involving rare cards, demonstrating how far some people will go to secure valuable collectibles.

Outside of collector markets, the broader franchise continues to receive new content updates and media adaptations. A new stop-motion animated series is scheduled for release on Disney+, and recent events include upcoming September schedules for Pokemon Go alongside a downloadable content update for Pokemon Pokopia earlier this summer.
