HoYoverse's Animal Crossing Competitor Petit Planet Previews Cosmic Exploration and Winter Launch

Developer HoYoverse is expanding beyond its action and role-playing roots with Petit Planet, an upcoming cozy life-simulation game designed to compete directly with Nintendo's established Animal Crossing franchise. Scheduled for an official launch this winter, the free-to-play title was recently showcased in a playable build at Gamescom, offering a deeper look at its mechanics, aesthetic, and unique features.

At its core, Petit Planet borrows heavily from the foundations of Animal Crossing. Players are tasked with constructing their own village, inviting colorful characters to move in, growing crops, and crafting various furniture pieces. The game even utilizes an identical camera pitch to Nintendo's hit series, featuring cylindrical stages that rotate as the player explores the town. The character designs adopt an aesthetic reminiscent of collectible blind boxes, resembling popular figures from brands like Pop Mart and Miniso.

However, Petit Planet aims to distinguish itself through its adventure-focused "Starsea Voyage" mode. This gameplay system allows players to travel out into the cosmos to explore small, distinct maps called "Islets." These locations introduce traditional adventure-style gameplay, including environmental puzzles and unique encounters. Exploring Islets yields rare resources, such as unique seeds that players can bring back to cultivate on their home island, as well as encounters with specialized NPCs like custom hat makers.

As a live-service project, HoYoverse plans to support the game with a rapid cadence of post-launch updates, including seasonal activities, cosmetics, and new furniture sets. Petit Planet will feature cross-platform compatibility and cross-save functionality. While the game is currently confirmed for PC and mobile platforms, the development team has indicated plans to bring the title to additional platforms in the future.
