Hearthstone Developers Outline Reign of the Black Empire Expansion and Monk Class
Blizzard leaders recently discussed upcoming Hearthstone content, including the Reign of the Black Empire expansion, the new Journey storytelling feature, and the upcoming Monk class.

During a recent event, Hearthstone Vice President and Executive Producer Nathan Lyons-Smith alongside Senior Game Design Manager Brenden Sewell detailed plans for the collectible card game. The presentation covered the upcoming expansion titled Reign of the Black Empire, which pits the Old Gods against the Titans in Azeroth's past. Developers shared insight into design decisions, including the restriction that limits decks to a single Old God card to ensure impactful gameplay without problematic interactions.
The team also discussed the new Assemble keyword, which features a minion pool totaling 250 cards across the Standard and Core formats. Developers noted that certain combinations, such as interactions involving Flame Imp that triggered infinite damage loops, had to be removed during testing. Additionally, the new Journey feature will introduce narrative content and voice acting directly into the game client, with a new chapter arriving every patch and new quests rolling out weekly starting October 20th.
Looking further ahead toward the 2027 Standard year, the team touched on the introduction of the Monk class, an addition requested by players for years. Developers explained that finding the right time and mechanics for the class required a special concept. The discussion also addressed community feedback and potential future updates as the team maps out the next several months of the game.
