Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea Adds Animal Companions and Open-World Exploration

The next Harvest Moon game expands beyond farm management with a new animal companion system, a larger open world to explore, and a mystery involving Guardian Spirits that players must solve while building relationships in Bloomfield Village.

Natsume is bringing the Harvest Moon series into its 30th anniversary year with Echoes of Teradea, a new entry that combines traditional farm management with exploration and adventure. The game releases October 15 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Players start as a customised farmer in Bloomfield Village, a peaceful settlement suddenly threatened by a strange mist covering the nearby Forest of Echoes, mysterious earthquakes, and power outages spreading across the land. The core loop remains familiar: plant crops using sprinklers and watering cans, tend livestock like cows, chickens, and sheep, and manage an expandable, fully decoratable farm. The game adds soil quality mechanics that require field rotation and biome-specific animals such as camels for desert travel and reindeer for colder regions.

A new animal companion system lets players bring pets outside the farm during exploration. Each animal offers passive skills. A Bernese dog, for example, can use Intimidation to calm aggressive wildlife like wolves and bears. Other animals recover stamina or provide heat resistance, making them valuable for venturing into dangerous areas. Players can also tame wild animals encountered in the world and either bring them to their farm or house them at a special animal centre.

The world design emphasises exploration and strategic traversal. The map isn't open from the start, with certain areas blocked by hostile animals or terrain until players obtain the right tools or companion abilities. Fast travel points and mount whistles help navigate the expanded world, though developer commentary suggests Echoes of Teradea requires more thoughtful navigation than the previous open-world entry, Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos. Players can take multiple routes between locations, such as crossing a repaired bridge or travelling underground through caves.

The story involves helping Guardian Spirits revitalise Teradea by collecting Happilia, a currency generated by helping villagers. Players visit four different villages, each with unique biomes, architecture, and outfit styles that provide regional buffs. A statue-finding system unlocks new skills scattered throughout the world, encouraging deeper exploration.

Beyond farming, players can romance ten eligible bachelors and bachelorettes (five each), with love interests spread across the four villages. Mining, fishing, crafting, and side activities like treasure hunts and selfie tasks provide alternative progression paths. Character customisation offers four hairstyles with biome-specific outfits unlocked through quests or purchases, each with colour variations and regional bonuses.

The game maintains the cosy visual aesthetic the series is known for while introducing larger environments and biome variety. Despite the adventure elements and survival mechanics like day-night cycles and stamina management, Echoes of Teradea is positioned as relaxing rather than punishing, with campsites available for rest, recovery, and campfire cooking.
