Halo Co-Creator Shares Franchise Revival Ideas, Doubts Xbox Leadership Interest
Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto has outlined his vision for reviving the struggling franchise, while expressing skepticism that Xbox leadership shares an interest in the brand.
Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto has shared his ideas for reviving the Halo franchise, proposing a new game and development philosophies designed to bring the brand back to prominence. Posting on social media, Lehto explained that his pitch would focus on a darker and more grounded military feel rather than trying to please every fan. According to Lehto, the proposed project would feature player-versus-player elements as the brains and player-versus-environment content as the heart and soul, though he acknowledged that the concept would not appeal to everyone.
Addressing the current state of the franchise, Lehto stated that the lore has become too convoluted and alienates prospective players. His solution would involve benching much of the current lore while respecting it, thereby establishing a new baseline narrative for both legacy and new audiences. Furthermore, Lehto emphasized that future Halo games must be built by a centralized, local team working together rather than being outsourced globally. He argued that outsourcing development harms the final product, pointing to examples like Halo: Campaign Evolved.
Despite his detailed vision, Lehto expressed doubt that his ideas would ever be implemented under current Xbox leadership, suggesting that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma does not possess a real interest in reviving the franchise. Lehto also previously criticized Halo: Campaign Evolved for pandering to players with short attention spans, though he praised the game's graphical upgrades. Meanwhile, recent reports indicate that Microsoft could potentially enlist Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games to handle a future installment in the franchise.
