Microsoft has handed off the Halo franchise to Activision and reduced Halo Studios to a skeleton crew, part of a broader restructuring that affected 268 roles across Xbox. According to insider reports, the decision to shift direction stemmed largely from how far away the studio's next major Halo project remained.

The Verge's Tom Warren and YouTuber Rebs Gaming, citing sources within Halo's leadership, reported that the next mainline Halo game was at minimum "years" away from completion when the layoffs occurred. No games were in full production at the time, though work was underway on Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes, Halo 7, and several spinoff campaigns. One shorter spinoff would have been based on the First Strike novel, planned as a release between the remake projects.

The delays traced to internal challenges. According to GamingBolt's reporting of Warren's findings, Halo Studios faced setbacks from leadership changes, technical shifts, and earlier rounds of layoffs. These obstacles compounded to push the next major title far into the future, making it an unattractive investment for Microsoft's current priorities.

Halo Studios now operates as roughly 30 people focused on supporting existing titles. Halo Infinite and Halo: Campaign Evolved will receive ongoing service from the reduced team. Xbox CCO Matt Booty stated the restructuring brought the company "roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring," signaling this latest round is part of a longer consolidation plan.

Activision has established a new, purpose-built studio dedicated to Halo's future. Activision president Rob Kostich said the company aims to "make the greatest Halo game ever," committing to staying "true to what made players love it in the first place" and creating something "worthy of its universe and legacy." Rumors suggest the project will be a full-feature, mainline installment, though no release window has been announced.

Halo Studios, originally founded in 2007 as 343 Industries following Bungie's independence, steered the franchise through mixed results. The studio delivered Halo 4, The Master Chief Collection, Halo 5: Guardians, and most recently Halo: Campaign Evolved, which launched in 2024 to criticism over its lack of multiplayer content and other gameplay elements.
