Halo: Campaign Evolved Review Highlights Disappointment With Cutscenes, Performance, and New Story Content

A review of Halo: Campaign Evolved for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X expresses disappointment over technical performance, pre-rendered cutscenes locked at 1080p/30fps, and rough voice acting, despite praising the core gameplay and visual landscapes.

Announced last year amid conflicting anticipation, Halo: Campaign Evolved has officially launched as an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original classic for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Developed by Halo Studios, the title introduces new story content and modern mechanics, but early critical reception highlights notable technical and creative shortcomings.

Reviewers point out that performance concerns regarding Unreal Engine 5 proved valid, particularly on PC where players are required to rely on DLSS and frame generation even with high-end hardware like an RTX 4090. On consoles, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X run the game at 60 FPS on performance mode, but other presentation choices fall short of flagship standards. Every cutscene in the game is entirely pre-rendered yet oddly locked at 1080p and 30 FPS, failing to utilize the advantages of modern hardware resolutions or match the gameplay's motion.

In addition to technical limitations, criticisms were leveled at the character animations and voice acting. Cutscene movements for characters such as the Master Chief, Cortana, and Sergeant Johnson are described as rigid and uncanny, with enemies lacking dynamic tactical behavior during gunfights. Furthermore, the pre-rendered format prevents players from seeing their custom armor in cutscenes, despite the developer's announcements highlighting new armor customization for co-op games.

Despite these heavy criticisms regarding the narrative pacing, cheesy dialogue, and cutscene presentation, the core experience retains some positive elements. The visuals captured in screenshots—including explosions, flora, and landscapes—are described as gorgeous. Moreover, once players adapt to modern additions like universal sprint and a centered crosshair, the underlying gameplay is reported to play smoothly and feel surprisingly right.
