Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Receives Major Graphics Overhaul via New DX11 Mod

A new graphics overhaul mod called ImmersiveVC for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City brings a modern DX11 renderer, procedural sky, volumetric clouds, and advanced lighting effects to the classic title.

Modder ReeveMods has released a new graphics overhaul mod for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City titled ImmersiveVC. This community project significantly upgrades the 2002 classic by running the entire game on a modern DX11 renderer instead of the original DX8 architecture. Among its technical enhancements, the mod introduces a procedural sky, volumetric clouds, and sun rays. It also features cascaded shadow maps and headlight shadow maps designed to enhance night scenes.

Additional visual improvements included in ImmersiveVC consist of per-pixel lighting effects from street lamps, vehicles, and police bars. The mod incorporates world-anchored rain, reflective wet roads, and refractive lens drops, alongside live water surfaces for both the sea and swimming pools. Currently, the early version of the modification is locked behind a Patreon paywall, though reports indicate the full version may be released for free upon completion.

Alongside ImmersiveVC, the reporting highlights other prominent community projects for the game, such as the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Nextgen Edition. This free remaster project brings the original game's map, missions, and content into the RAGE Engine, utilizing character and pedestrian models from the Xbox version alongside car models and city improvements from the Definitive Edition. Players can also utilize an HD Texture Pack or configure an RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod built on the GTA 4 RTX Remix framework, though the latter requires a high-end graphics processing unit. Other notable additions mentioned include a first-person perspective mod, a vehicle handling adjustment mod, and the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City New Legacy Mod, which utilizes Sanny Builder and CLEO to add 25 new story missions while preserving the classic gameplay experience.
