GTA 6 Features New Relationship and Criminal Profile Systems, Plus Revamped Wanted Mechanics

Rockstar details Grand Theft Auto 6's upcoming relationship system between co-protagonists Jason and Lucia, a revamped six-star Wanted system, and a contextual Criminal Profile mechanic.

Rockstar Games has shared extensive new details regarding the core mechanics of Grand Theft Auto 6, highlighting a brand-new relationship system, an evolved Wanted system, and a contextual Criminal Profile feature. According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, speaking in an interview with IGN, the upcoming open-world title features a relationship system designed to underpin and support the bond between co-protagonists and lovers Jason and Lucia. Players can nurture their connection by spending time together in the open world, whether by exploring, engaging in slice-of-life activities like playing pool, mini golf, kayaking, base jumping, jet skiing, or carrying out bank and store robberies together.

While players can seamlessly switch between Jason and Lucia in a manner similar to Grand Theft Auto 5, their relationship functions separately from a tracking system that monitors your criminal behavior. Maintaining the romance is optional, and the game's narrative structure ensures the pair remain partners in crime regardless of whether the player actively nurtures their romance. However, building or neglecting the bond will have a bearing on how their story plays out, though it does not provide explicit gameplay benefits. Players can also split the characters up independently to shake police pursuits or let one character handle daily routines.

Complementing the relationship system are major updates to the franchise's classic crime mechanics. The Wanted system returns to a classic six-star setup, enhanced by heightened police awareness. Suspect descriptions now account for what your character is wearing, the vehicle you are driving, and whether you were spotted with another character, meaning a crime generally requires a witness or a reported alarm to trigger a response. Players can evade capture by changing outfits, swapping vehicles, entering busy pedestrian areas on foot, or splitting up partners. Alongside Wanted comes the Criminal Profile, a more nuanced evolution of the Honor system seen in Red Dead Redemption 2. The system takes context into account, ensuring players are not penalized for self-defense or returning fire, while tracking unnecessary escalations, hit-and-runs, and acts of kindness such as feeding stray animals.

These gameplay reveals arrive alongside a Netflix extended look trailer and follow studio developments involving Rockstar parent company Take-Two and worker organization efforts. Following the firing of around 40 staff members, the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain accused the studio of victimisation, prompting workers to form the Rockstar Game Workers Union.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
