GTA 6 Pre-Orders Heavily Favor PS5 Despite Xbox Release, Exposing Wider Console Gap
Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are skewed significantly toward PlayStation 5, according to sources cited by The Verge, underscoring Xbox's persistent struggles to compete in the console market despite securing day-one access to the blockbuster title.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but pre-order data suggests a stark disparity between the two platforms. While Xbox has claimed record pre-orders for the game, sources told The Verge that pre-orders are "heavily skewed" toward PS5, continuing a trend that began with reports from IGN citing a six-to-one ratio that later widened to eight-to-one.
Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball pushed back on those reports, stating the company is "very happy" with GTA 6 pre-orders and that the game is already breaking Xbox records. He noted that Xbox's share of pre-orders matches its share of the overall console market. That statement doesn't necessarily contradict reports of PS5 dominance; rather, it suggests the disparity reflects Xbox's smaller current console footprint compared to PlayStation's 95.3 million units shipped worldwide.
Grand Theft Auto has long been culturally synonymous with PlayStation. The 3D era of the franchise began on PlayStation 2 with Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. Despite Microsoft's marketing push in the mid-2000s, including a notable E3 announcement, the series remained PlayStation-dominant in players' minds.
Sony's ongoing relationship with Rockstar Games reinforces that association. The publisher has added Grand Theft Auto Online to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers, offered the game free with GTA 5's Enhanced Edition for PS5 players, and marketed limited-edition DualSense controllers. Rockstar's Extended Look for GTA 6 debuted on PS5, with millions of viewers seeing gameplay running at 30 frames per second. The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, promises even better visuals for the title.
The broader issue reveals Xbox's structural disadvantage in the console market. Third-party developers consistently favor PlayStation for exclusivity deals and day-one releases. Titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Phantom Blade Zero secured year-long PS5 exclusivity windows. Even smaller releases from studios like Falcom routinely skip Xbox, often due to regional market preferences.
Xbox's response has centered on acquiring studios to bolster first-party output, but recent years have seen significant closures and departures. Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Tango Gameworks, and Hi-Fi Rush have all been shut down or closed. Studios like id Software have been gutted. Publishing partnerships with Avalanche Studios and IO Interactive ended in layoffs and abandoned projects.
GTA 6's pre-order split reflects a long-standing weakness that neither current hardware dominance nor planned studio acquisitions have solved. As next-generation consoles reportedly approach, the challenge for Xbox remains securing the third-party support and exclusive content necessary to compete with PlayStation's established market position.
