GTA 6 Was Not Fully Formed When Trailer 1 Released in 2023, Says Rockstar Boss

When Rockstar Games released the initial trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 in December 2023, the title appeared to be progressing smoothly, but it was not "fully formed" at that stage. According to Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson, the trailer's featured song—Tom Petty's "Love is a Long Road"—served as a crucial "mission statement" that developers could rally around to complete the project.

In an interview with Trois Couleurs, Nelson explained that teams typically do not have a fully formed game at the time of an initial teaser, but rather hold a clear idea of what the final product will become. The creation serves as a guiding light to determine the necessary feel of the experience. Nelson also discussed the development process behind the setting, noting that after deciding to place GTA 6 in Vice City, also known as Miami, a small group of developers initially traveled there to drive around, take numerous photographs, soak up the atmosphere, and share ideas for incorporation.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Market tracking data from SensorTower indicates the title has already achieved 5 million pre-order sales, generating upward of $500 million in revenue. Furthermore, Rockstar has partnered with Sony for the release, a collaboration that includes a themed DualSense controller slated to go on sale September 10 at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET for $85.
