GTA 6 Netflix Preview Triggers PlayStation and Xbox Hardware Sales Jump in the UK

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S console sales experienced a noticeable increase in the UK following a Grand Theft Auto 6 preview on Netflix. According to Nielsen IQ data reported by The Games Business, PS5 console sales rose by 33%, while Xbox Series X|S experienced a 34% increase. Retailers such as Argos and Smyths Toys have seen PS5 Pro consoles sell out nationwide, leaving only base models available to consumers.

Despite the recent surge leading up to the scheduled November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 and October's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, industry analysts maintain cautious expectations. Ronan Patrick of Newzoo stated that the firm anticipates an uptick in the install base, but noted that it will likely not be exceptionally massive. Patrick pointed out that the PlayStation 5 is 67% more expensive in inflation-adjusted terms compared to its launch price, while Xbox models are twice as expensive.

VGC data indicates that overall UK hardware sales remain down 14.4% year-on-year, driven primarily by a 32% decline in PS5 sales, whereas Xbox Series X|S sales have risen 3.1% over the same comparative period. Meanwhile, the extended Grand Theft Auto 6 preview proved to be a major streaming success for Netflix, drawing 31.1 million views in four days to become the platform's most-viewed title of the week. The preview also garnered 22 million views on YouTube within a week, while Sensor Tower data recorded a 35% hour-over-hour increase in US mobile viewership for Netflix during the premiere.
