Grand Theft Auto 6 Runs at 30 FPS, 60 FPS Mode Remains Unconfirmed for Launch
A new rumor indicates that Grand Theft Auto 6 runs at 30 frames per second, while a 60 FPS mode remains unconfirmed for launch.
As anticipation builds for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, players and industry analysts continue to examine every piece of media for performance details. While the title was observed running at 30 frames per second on the PlayStation 5 during a showcase, confirmation of a 60 FPS mode for the launch window remains unverified. According to reports stemming from Davy Jones of Flow Games via machine translation, a conversation with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson suggested that implementing a Performance Mode—either at launch or at a later date—would require consulting directly with the technical team.
Additional technical specifications, such as exact resolution and ray tracing features, also remain unknown. Technical experts from Digital Foundry analyzed the Extended Look footage and observed that the game appeared to run at 4K upscaled from a native 1440p resolution. However, they expressed doubts regarding whether 60 FPS support is achievable given the heavy reliance of Rockstar's open-world game architecture on CPU power rather than GPU capabilities. Experts theorize that even the upgraded PS5 Pro might struggle to hit that higher frame rate target, though support for the console has been confirmed despite ongoing specifics remaining under wraps.
Despite the lack of a confirmed 60 FPS option, technical analysts praised the current 30 FPS implementation as relatively stable and well-paced, noting only very occasional single frame drops. They suggested that achieving this level of stability required immense effort given the high fidelity and world density. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19th for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
