Matthew Rhys continues a winning streak with the release of Golden Axe, an animated comedy series based on Sega's 1989 video game of the same name. All 10 episodes are now streaming on Paramount+.

Rhys voices dwarf warrior Gilius Thunderhead in the adaptation. The cast also includes Danny Pudi (Community, Mythic Quest), Liam McIntyre (Gears of War 4), and Lisa Gilroy as sorceress Tyris. Cart Tart rounds out the ensemble as a humanoid panther character.

According to Paramount+, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who refuses to stay dead. Their mission is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and unprepared adventurer whose heroic ambitions far exceed his actual abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, the group must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.

The series arrives as Rhys is celebrating a historic Emmy win. He became the first man to win two lead acting Emmys on the same night, taking home awards for comedy series Widow's Bay and limited series The Beast in Me. He also became the only person to receive a lead actor Emmy across all three genres, adding to his 2018 drama series win for The Americans.

The first two episodes of Golden Axe are available for free on YouTube, with the full season on Paramount+.
