Fight Night Reboot Plans Cancelled, But Series May Return Under New Direction

The Fight Night boxing franchise at EA has remained dormant since 2011, but the studio has explored a return for years. Development reached pre-production stages, and at one point there were plans for a potential Fight Night comeback following the launch of EA Sports UFC 6. Those original plans have now been cancelled.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Insider Gaming on condition of anonymity, the decision to scrap the original reboot came around a year ago. Work on the game had already been paused before the cancellation was finalised.
The franchise's future remains uncertain. While the original direction has been abandoned, the series is not necessarily dead. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which completed its takeover of EA in August, has a significant stake in professional boxing through multiple investments and ownership of The Ring magazine. The group has invested billions in acquiring and promoting major boxing events.
Given this interest in the sport, new discussions about a Fight Night return could happen, though any future project would need to be "brand new" according to sources familiar with the matter. EA must also consider its financial position, as the company carries approximately $20 billion in debt from the Saudi takeover. Any revival would need to make business sense within that context.
The original plans for Fight Night remain shelved, but the combination of Saudi Arabia's boxing interests and the franchise's dormant status suggests the possibility of a complete restart if the company decides to pursue it.
