Fate/Extra Record Preview Showcases Card-Based Combat and Dungeon Crawling Ahead of 2027 Launch
A detailed preview of Fate/Extra Record highlights its card-based combat system, dungeon exploration, and character-driven storytelling ahead of its January 2027 release.

Recent previews of Type-Moon's upcoming title, Fate/Extra Record, have provided a deeper look at the game's reimagined combat system, dungeon-crawling elements, and story-driven framework. Developed as a full remake of the 2010 PlayStation Portable title Fate/Extra, the project features crisp visuals, cel-shaded character models, and Spine animations designed by illustrator Arco Wada. The game is scheduled to launch for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
Set within the wider Fate continuity originating from the visual novel Fate/stay night, the story places an amnesiac protagonist inside Tsukiumihara Academy. This digital world hosts the Holy Grail War, an elimination tournament run by an entity known as SE.RA.PH. Competitors known as Masters are partnered with Heroic Spirits called Servants. Each week, players must participate in a duel against another Master and Servant duo. In between these pivotal bouts, players explore a digital dungeon called the Arena to gather information, complete side quests from Taiga Fujimura, and locate items called Trigger Keys necessary for progression.
The title departs from the rock-paper-scissors-style combat of the original release by introducing a card-based system built around deckbuilding and Action Points. At the start of each turn, players draw commands from their deck, balancing resource expenditure to counter incoming enemy actions. Players choose one of three Servants at the beginning of the journey, consisting of Saber, Archer, or Caster. Each companion provides a distinct combat style and influences the narrative. Saber relies on heavy damage and rose-themed cards that increase attack power, while Archer focuses on quick command chains and damage multipliers. Caster is noted by developers as the more challenging option for players.
In addition to standard encounters with hostile programs and floor bosses, players must manage a calendar-like time system that adds tension to exploration. Returning to a base camp inside a church advances the in-game days, forcing players to weigh recovery against time constraints. The game will be published globally on PC and in Japan by Aniplex. Console editions will be published in North America by XSEED Games and in Europe by Marvelous Europe.
