Former PlayStation Studios Boss Shuhei Yoshida Warns of AI-Driven Competition in Game Development

In a recent interview, former PlayStation Studios head Shuhei Yoshida discussed how artificial intelligence will increase competition and create a tougher future for developers.

In an interview with Gamerbraves, former PlayStation Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida shared his perspective on the rising influence of artificial intelligence in game development. While Yoshida expressed excitement as a player, he warned that AI-driven tools will lead to an increasingly difficult market for creators trying to monetize their work.

According to Yoshida, AI tools are lowering the barrier to entry, "allowing almost anybody to become a game developer." With AI assisting in tasks like writing code, solo artists and designers can now construct entire projects independently. While this acceleration in development speed will yield a higher volume of releases, it also introduces significant hurdles. Yoshida stated, "For anyone who wants to make money by developing games, we'll see even tougher competition going forward. As a fan of games, I'm very excited about the future and seeing so many interesting games come out. But from a developer's standpoint, it's going to be a really tough future." This influx of titles could potentially lead to consumer decision paralysis due to the sheer volume of choices.

In addition to AI, Yoshida commented on PlayStation's decision to cease physical disc production in January 2028. He suggested the transition might not be "such a big issue" because physical-disc games frequently require downloads anyway, making them highly similar to digital media. However, he admitted that it would still be disappointing if physical games were no longer available for collectors to purchase.
