Escape From Playtime Hands-On Preview: Co-op Horror Blends Familiar Mechanics With Franchise Appeal

Insider Gaming played through Escape From Playtime, the four-player co-op spin-off that tasks players with scavenging in an abandoned toy factory while evading threats. The game replicates a successful indie formula but adds enough variety and longevity

Five years after the original Poppy Playtime, the franchise has grown into a multi-title series with an upcoming film and substantial merchandise. Escape From Playtime continues this momentum as a four-player co-op spin-off set in an abandoned toy factory where players assume the roles of 'Smiling Critters' running amok through procedurally generated levels.

Insider Gaming attended a hands-on preview with developer representation and two other journalists. The core loop mirrors resource-gathering horror games like REPO and Lethal Company: enter the factory, hunt down valuables, place them in a trolley, and meet a quota before escaping. The enforced proximity chat between players creates genuine tension, with isolation and vulnerability setting in when teammates spread too far apart. The team's session resulted in multiple deaths despite quick familiarity with the climbing mechanics, which allow characters to scale most surfaces and walls to reach hidden loot.

A key design nuance separates Escape From Playtime from similar titles. Many items function as dual-purpose resources: Glow Sticks are relatively low-value but more useful for illumination than quota contribution. These trade-off decisions become increasingly critical in procedurally generated later levels. The variety extends beyond scavenging. Bugs attack and stick to players, requiring specific items to remove. A more ominous, statue-like threat hunts players with Predator-like persistence, demanding constant vigilance. Puzzles break up the traditional gameplay by forcing players to locate electrical sources to unlock doors or find switches in gas-filled rooms.

Progression escalates the challenge through escalating quotas. Meeting targets increases the required haul on subsequent runs; failing incurs penalties that eventually trigger a game-over state with an undisclosed consequence described as equally entertaining as core gameplay. Level modifiers introduce additional variables across runs, such as specific puzzle encounters and fluctuating item values.

Escape From Playtime avoids the humor found in comparable co-op horror titles, instead emphasizing horror atmosphere and long-term replayability. While the core mechanics follow established indie conventions, the implementation balances accessibility for newcomers with depth that rewards franchise familiarity. The preview session demonstrated sufficient variety to sustain multiple runs without feeling repetitive, though the game does not represent a genre-defining innovation.
