Diablo IV on Switch 2 is excellent but needs patches to reach its potential
Blizzard's Switch 2 port of Diablo IV delivers a solid handheld experience with cross-progression support, though the 40fps mode outshines the sluggish 30fps option and some UI elements need refinement.

Diablo IV launched on Nintendo Switch 2 a few days after being revealed at BlizzCon, and Blizzard delivered a port that proves far more capable than early concerns suggested. The Switch 2 version is excellent in its current state, though specific patches would elevate it further.
The port leverages Switch 2 hardware features including touch support for menus, HD rumble feedback, two visual modes for both docked and handheld play, and Switch system invite functionality. Full cross-play and cross-progression are supported, allowing players to carry over progress from other platforms. However, in-game currency purchased with real money or from different game editions does not transfer to Switch 2, though earned currency does carry over.
Blizzard targets 1440p at 30fps in quality mode when docked and 40fps in performance mode on both docked and handheld setups, using upscaling to reach these targets. The visual presentation maintains Diablo IV's identity despite reductions to grass, texture quality, geometry, effects, shadows, and UI resolution compared to the PS5 version. The lower UI resolution on Switch 2 even in quality mode is a notable gap that could be addressed in future patches.
Performance testing across multiple characters and play modes revealed that the 30fps option feels sluggish with occasional hitching and frame drops, making the 40fps mode the recommended choice. The 40fps performance holds up well during gameplay and delivers sharper visuals than Steam Deck while maintaining the full Diablo IV experience. Load times from character selection are competitive with other platforms, even faster than Steam Deck for initial loading.
Early gameplay uncovered some stability issues specific to the Switch 2 version. Two instances of freezing occurred while teleporting to friends during multiplayer sessions, though these did not happen on the same network setup when testing on Steam Deck. Such bugs are expected to be resolved quickly post-launch.
For players already invested in Diablo IV on other platforms, the Switch 2 version offers a compelling portable option. The 40fps mode with Enhanced Visuals toggled off provides the best experience. While the PS5 version remains superior with its 60fps target and improved visuals, Blizzard's Switch 2 effort represents a significant step up from the PS4 release and a solid way to play both at home and on the go. Higher UI resolution and performance stabilization patches would move the port closer to its full potential.
