Blizzard Announces Diablo 5 with Apocalyptic Setting and Spring 2029 Release Window
Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo 5 during Blizzcon 2026, targeting a Spring 2029 release window and introducing a fallen world where Diablo has already won.

Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced that Diablo 5 is in early development. The reveal took place during Blizzcon 2026 as part of the studio's celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary. Developers shared initial details regarding the story, systems, and classes for the upcoming action role-playing game during a Forging the Next Era panel.
The game is currently slated for a Spring 2029 release window. No specific platforms have been confirmed yet by Blizzard, though past franchise history points toward likely releases on PC and consoles. Narrative director Jennifer Brandes Hepler explained that the story departs from previous franchise entries by placing players into a world where an apocalypse has already occurred. In this setting, humanity has fallen and Diablo rules and reshapes the mortal realm of Sanctuary.
Players step into the role of the Heir to Westmarch, a continent that now functions as an outpost of Hell. According to senior game director Joe Shely, remaining humans have mostly been corrupted, while those who resist are placed in soul cages or drawn into the Terror realm. The narrative features a unique bond and vulnerability between the player character and the Lord of Terror. Survival mechanics center on building up a caravan of allies, including vendors and companions such as a former sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin.
The announcement also highlighted three initial classes. Returning options include the ranged Demon Hunter from Diablo 3 and the agile melee Monk. They are joined by a brand-new class called the Plague Knight, described as a practitioner of walking death who spreads disease across the battlefield. Gear systems will feature a deep crafting approach taking inspiration from Diablo 4 alongside the return of runes and runewords from Diablo 2. Blizzard stated that regular development updates will begin arriving in 2027 to gather player feedback throughout the production process.
