A homebrew team has released an English translation patch for Cyber Doll, a Sega Saturn exclusive cyberpunk RPG from 1996 that has remained unplayable for Western audiences for 30 years.

Developed by studio Betop and published by I'MAX, Cyber Doll is set in 2039 in the aftermath of a pandemic that stripped humanity of physiological evolution. Survivors have advanced their prosthetic technology, fitting themselves with experimental limbs and organs. This has created a fractured society of evolutionary rejects, human hybrids, and near-gods. The story begins when a mutant invasion led by a mysterious entity called "Dark Visitor" forces the semi-mechanised people of Zero City to fight for humanity's survival.

The gameplay blends top-down RPG exploration with turn-based combat using a limb-based offense and defense mechanic that reflects the game's cybernetic modification themes.

The new patch was created by modders Exxistance and Wiredcrackpot. It translates all dialogue and menu screens into English and adds subtitles to the intro sequence and all in-game cutscenes. Exxistance stated that the text translation, game coding, font design, and additional art assets were created by the pair themselves. Exxistance did use Claude to help implement a monospace font in-game.

Wiredcrackpot, who handled the translation work, emphasised the importance of human effort in the project. "I purely do video game translations as a means to study so if I were to use AI it'd completely void the point," Wiredcrackpot said. "I feel very strongly about AI use in most cases like anyone else; it's a means for talentless people to gain gratification from a false feeling of having done something." Wiredcrackpot has translated around 14 games, with Cyber Doll being the first to receive widespread attention.

This translation project is separate from an earlier effort by TrevoStuden, which was cancelled in July. The Cyber Doll patch is available to download from GitHub.
