Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois Invests in Astralis Through NXTPLAY
The investment firm NXTPLAY, co-founded by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, has acquired a stake in Astralis ownership consortium Fusion Esports Group, expanding Courtois's portfolio into esports.

Thibaut Courtois's investment firm NXTPLAY has invested in Astralis ownership consortium Fusion Esports Group, giving the Real Madrid goalkeeper a stake in the Counter-Strike organization. The investment marks another move into esports for Courtois and co-founder Gonzalo Vila.
Astralis has been under Fusion Esports Group ownership since September 2025. The organization won four Counter-Strike Majors and remains one of esports' most recognized franchises. The investment group, led by CEO Jonas 'calc' Gundersen and CRO Jakob Lund Kristensen, acquired the team after reports in June 2025 revealed financial difficulties under previous ownership.
NXTPLAY's portfolio spans multiple sectors beyond esports. The investment group holds stakes in Belgian football team KRC Genk, French team Le Mans FC, E1 Series racing team Sierra Racing Club, and non-sporting brands including Oakberry and STAMP, a tax-free shopping platform.
Fusion Esports Group has worked to stabilize Astralis since the takeover. The consortium secured new sponsorships including betting partner Stake and streaming platform Zero1Gaming, and established a partnership with SEO platform Bazoom. In December 2025, three months into the new ownership, Astralis disclosed delayed wage payments prior to the StarLadder Budapest Major. Gundersen attributed the delay to inherited financial challenges, telling Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet: "We took over a company facing certain challenges we were fully aware of from the beginning."
Since then, Astralis has adjusted its roster away from a full Danish lineup toward what management described as a financially prudent approach. The team acquired Love 'phzy' Smidebrant and Gytis 'ryu' Glušauskas as part of roster changes.
