Skyrim and Fallout Developers Felt Insulated From Layoffs Prior to Xbox Cuts

Staff at Bethesda Game Studios believed their work on legendary franchises like Skyrim and Fallout would protect them from industry-wide downsizing, before unexpected two-minute meetings ended decades-long careers.

Bethesda is among the game studios affected by ongoing mass layoffs at Xbox, which are scheduled to cut 3,200 jobs by the conclusion of the 2027 fiscal year. At least 1,600 employees have already been let go, including franchise veterans with decades-long careers such as Christiane Meister and Ray Lederer. Prior to the announcement, staff at the studio reportedly hoped that their contributions to major properties would insulate them from Microsoft's cost-cutting measures.

Anne Barrett, a former employee at Bethesda Game Studios Austin, noted that workers felt a sense of impending doom while reading public reports about industry downsizing, but initially believed their studio was secure. Staff members learned about the mass layoffs when Asha Sharma published an Xbox memo, followed approximately an hour later by brief meetings where employees were informed of their terminations. Barrett described the experience as devastating, noting that some workers processed the news through disbelief while others experienced extreme distress after spending years fulfilling their career ambitions at the company.

Despite the studio having multiple upcoming titles in various stages of production—including anticipated role-playing games like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5—Xbox has continued to cut veteran talent who contributed to past entries in these series. Former staff members have expressed concern over the loss of institutional knowledge, pointing out that proprietary technology and established visual identities rely on experienced developers who cannot easily be replaced by newcomers.

Reflecting on the broader state of the industry, Barrett expressed that her view of the sector has been damaged, pointing to a perceived loss of focus on creative investment in favor of repetitive formulas. As Xbox continues its planned reductions, the loss of experienced developers at storied studios raises questions about how future large-scale projects will maintain their traditional quality and technical standards.
