Activision has taken control of Halo development as part of Xbox's September 2026 organizational restructuring. The company will develop the next mainline Halo game with a purpose-built team distinct from its Call of Duty division, marking a significant shift for the storied first-person shooter franchise.

Rob Kostich, Activision's president, outlined the company's ambitions in a memo to staff. "For Halo, our goal is clear: make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place," he said. "It is a bold ambition, one that this franchise deserves. We have already begun assembling a purpose-built team, unique in capability and talent, ready and excited to deliver this next chapter with the community."

The transition comes after Xbox eliminated 268 roles at Halo Studios as part of broader restructuring efforts. Activision also assumed control of Rare and World's Edge during the same organizational changes. Kostich added, "We're thrilled to welcome Halo, Rare, and World's Edge to Activision. It's an honor and a responsibility that we do not take lightly. These teams and their games have inspired fans around the world for decades."

Halo's recent history has been turbulent. Since 343 Industries took over the franchise from Bungie in 2012, the series has faced critical and commercial challenges. Halo 4 received moderate reception, The Master Chief Collection suffered a catastrophic launch, and Halo 5: Guardians' campaign disappointed fans. Halo Infinite was intended to reset the franchise for a decade-long content cycle, but development faced setbacks including cut features and delayed launches. After a mixed reception and prolonged live service struggles, 343 Industries released its final content update in November 2025. The most recent title, Halo: Campaign Evolved, launched in July 2026.

Activision's involvement represents a fresh start for a franchise seeking to recapture its former glory. No release date or additional details have been announced for the next Halo title.
