Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Confirms Annihilation Battle Mode and Story Trailer
Bandai Namco and the development team have revealed a new story trailer for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, confirming the return of the fan-favorite Annihilation Battle mode ahead of its October release.
The latest installment in the flight-shooting franchise, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, is scheduled to release on October 2, 2026. A newly published story trailer offers PlayStation players a first look at the daily lives of the crew aboard The Endurance. The footage highlights their time together during an ongoing war against Sotoan ace squadrons and colossal superweapons that threaten the Federation of Central Usea.
Dogfights remain a core pillar of the experience. Today's trailer showcased a head-to-head battle between the leader of the Elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit, known as Shadow 22, and the Joker Flight led by the Wings of Theve. Beyond aerial threats, players must also confront numerous ground and sky superweapons to lead their squad to victory and save the Federation of Central Usea.
Alongside the trailer, developers confirmed the return of a franchise favorite mode known as Annihilation Battle. In Mission 7, players embark on a counterattack against Sotoan forces where they must destroy every enemy and target in sight. The mode features key enemy facilities, including a solar power plant, an oil tank, an air base, and an ammo dump. Players can utilize supply lines to replenish weapons during the mission.
According to game producer Manabu Shimomoto, this mission category embodies the core pillar of the series by granting players the freedom to eliminate enemies based on their own judgment. Players enjoy a high degree of freedom within the time limit to devise strategies, such as choosing which targets to take down and deciding when to return to the return line to reload weapons. The game also introduces environmental mechanics like chain destructions. Hitting a flammable object, such as an oil tank at an enemy base, can cause an explosion that destroys surrounding buildings. Structures located near where downed enemy aircraft crash may also be destroyed.
During the campaign, players will encounter formidable foes threatening the Federation of Central Usea forces. One such threat is the Megafloat Fatsia, a six-kilometer marine megafacility off the west coast of the Republic of Sotoa that serves as an arms factory and supply station. It features automated defense systems, railguns, and a 2,000-meter runway. Another major threat is the Tonitrus Spear, a Sotoan kinetic satellite weapon stationed in low-orbit altitude that launches dense metal rods using gravitational acceleration.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2026. Players who pre-order the Deluxe Edition can secure early access and additional bonus items.
