Microsoft's Xbox division has undergone significant restructuring, leaving the Xbox Game Studios brand substantially smaller than before. The publisher now consists of only three studios under the Xbox Game Studios banner: The Coalition (known for Gears of War), inXile Entertainment (Wasteland, Clockwork Revolution), and Playground Games (Forza Horizon, Fable).

The organizational changes reflect a broader reshuffling across Xbox. Mojang, the Minecraft developer, now reports directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma rather than falling under Xbox Game Studios. Rare and World's Edge, the Age of Empires developer, have moved under Activision Blizzard. Obsidian Entertainment transferred to ZeniMax, and Turn 10 merged with Playground Games.

At its peak, Xbox Game Studios included at least a dozen studios. The publisher has since shut down or divested from most of them, leaving only three active development teams. All three remaining studios have games scheduled for release within the next year: Gears of War: E-Day, Clockwork Revolution, and Fable.

The diminished Xbox Game Studios branding raises questions about Microsoft's publishing strategy. Since mid-2025, the Xbox website has lacked dedicated webpages or references to Xbox Game Studios, contrasting sharply with PlayStation Studios, which maintains its own page and lists 17 studios. The status of the Xbox Game Studios label itself remains unclear, with the possibility that Microsoft may phase out the branding altogether.

Under Asha Sharma's leadership, Xbox has emphasized strengthening its brand through exclusive content. As the internal publisher shrinks and becomes less prominent, the distinction of what constitutes an "Xbox game" has become increasingly ambiguous.
