Xbox Discs Will Grant Digital Access to Games in New Preservation Program

Microsoft has announced a new program that will allow users to add physical disc games to their digital libraries. According to the company, the initiative is part of a broader commitment to game preservation. The feature will begin rolling out for Xbox Insiders starting August 31, initially supporting a few thousand titles.

Under this system, a physical disc can be claimed on an account, granting digital access even when the disc is not in the console's disc tray. This grants access through Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, enabling players to stream titles on phones or PCs with cloud saves. The physical disc will continue to function normally after being added, meaning players can still lend it to friends. The digital license is revocable if the physical disc is present, allowing a new owner to claim it if the game is sold or traded on the pre-owned market.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the new feature on X, drawing significant public attention. The rollout follows recent major restructurings at Microsoft, which included layoffs and studio closures last month. While the update aims to help players transition existing libraries forward, questions remain regarding whether future hardware generations will continue to support physical disc drives.
