Xbox Announces Initiative to Let Players Digitize Xbox One and Series X Discs

Xbox has announced a new initiative aimed at converting physical games into digital copies, addressing an era where physical discs are becoming less viable for publishers. The feature is scheduled to go live for Insiders to test on August 31st and will support thousands of titles, encompassing most Xbox One and Xbox Series X games.

The system works by having players insert their physical disc into the console and then claim the corresponding digital entitlement. Once completed, users gain access to digital ecosystem benefits such as cloud gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere features. Notably, the physical copy remains fully usable without restrictions.

While the initial launch covers a vast library, players who have accumulated collections over the past decade will not be able to digitize every single title immediately. Xbox has acknowledged this limitation and plans to expand support over time, though not every game will be available at launch. A public release date for all players has not yet been announced.

This initiative represents a significant step toward game preservation, particularly as industry discussions continue regarding physical media futures. In contrast, competitors like PlayStation have indicated plans to stop manufacturing discs for new titles starting in January 2028, without providing clarity regarding existing titles.
