Valve Steam Frame vs. Meta Quest 3: Hardware Specs, PC Streaming, and Open Platform Comparison
A detailed hardware specification and feature comparison between Valve's standalone Steam Frame headset and Meta's Quest 3, covering wireless PC streaming, processing power, and open platform capabilities.

Valve has detailed the hardware specifications and features of its upcoming Steam Frame standalone headset, setting up a direct comparison against Meta Quest 3. Players tracking virtual reality hardware will find notable differences in processing power, PC streaming methods, and operating system flexibility between the two devices.
For wireless PC VR streaming, Valve includes a Wi-Fi 6E dongle that plugs directly into a computer or a Steam Machine, cutting out the middleman of a home Wi-Fi router. Meta Quest 3 also supports PC VR streaming, but requires routing the video stream through a home Wi-Fi router, which can introduce bandwidth bottlenecks. Furthermore, Steam Frame features an ARM-based Qualcomm Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 processor paired with 16GB of unified LPDDR5 RAM, alongside a built-in compatibility layer that allows it to natively play x86 Windows and Linux content from Steam. By contrast, Meta Quest 3 utilizes a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor with 8GB of unified LPDDR5 RAM and natively runs apps compiled for ARM under Horizon OS.
Operating system flexibility and hardware expandability represent another major departure. Steam Frame runs SteamOS, offering an open platform with direct access to Linux and support for any operating system users want to install, plus a user-accessible gen4 PCIe expansion port and a microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB of additional storage. Meanwhile, Meta Quest 3 features a locked bootloader running an Android-based Horizon OS without root access or expandable physical storage slots.
On paper, both headsets feature LCD pancake optics. Quest 3 utilizes a 2,064 by 2,208 per-eye display resolution, while Steam Frame offers a 2,160 by 2,160 per-eye resolution. Both headsets target a refresh rate of 72Hz to 120Hz, though Steam Frame features an experimental 144Hz mode. In the passthrough category, Quest 3 includes full-color camera passthrough out of the box, whereas Steam Frame ships with monochrome camera passthrough, though Valve plans a color add-on later.
Steam Frame is priced at $1,059 for the 256GB version and $1,299 for the 1TB model. Meta Quest 3 launched in 2023 at a base retail price of $500. Valve is currently distributing developer kits ahead of Steam Frame's scheduled 2026 launch.
