Steam Week in Review: 54 Idle Games Released Last Week Amid AI Slop Concerns
A total of 54 idle games launched on Steam last week, with many utilizing generative AI and displaying uncannily similar user interfaces.
The Steam marketplace has seen a massive surge in incremental and idle games, with 54 titles carrying the "idler" tag releasing in a single week. According to data tracked by SteamDB, the number of games bearing the idler tag has grown dramatically over recent years, moving from 100 in 2020 to 647 in 2024, 1,033 last year, and 1,811 so far this year, alongside thousands of upcoming or TBA projects.
While standout titles like Next Reign: Kingdom and We Need More Humans! feature distinctive art styles or novel premises, and Zad Archery's title holds positive user reviews, a vast majority of the newly released idlers feature explicit AI disclosures. Browsing the unfiltered catalog reveals that many of these titles share uncanny aesthetic similarities, particularly a gravitation toward dark blue background colors and awkward user interface layouts. Games such as Brainrot Clicker, Path of the Idle Cultivator, Nexus: Quantum Industries, and Vespera have acknowledged utilizing generative AI components for visual assets, UI layouts, or written content.
In other platform news, the weekly top revenue chart on Steam was led by Star Wars Zero Company, an XCOM-style strategy RPG developed by Bit Reactor. Other notable releases and entries included The Blood of Dawnwalker, which sold a million units within three days across all platforms, and the Elden Ring Tarnished Pack DLC, which debuted lower on the charts amid mixed user reception regarding its value. Meanwhile, several indie titles also made their debut, including the work-from-home puzzle game Worming from Home, the open-world adventure Future? No Thanks!, the Microprose-published space corvette simulation Deck & Conn, and the post-apocalyptic early access survival RPG Scavland.
