Scalebound Developers Express Fresh Interest in Reviving Cancelled Xbox Exclusive Under New Leadership

Key figures at PlatinumGames, including Hideki Kamiya and Kento Koyama, have voiced their strong desire to revive the cancelled Xbox exclusive Scalebound following changes in Xbox leadership.

Developers behind the cancelled Xbox One exclusive Scalebound have once again expressed interest in bringing the project back to life, this time directing their attention toward new Xbox leadership. Originally cancelled in 2017 while Phil Spencer was in charge, the project's fate now rests with new Xbox boss Asha Sharma, prompting renewed discussion over whether the title could potentially be revived.

In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, Clover Studio Head and Chief Game Designer Hideki Kamiya confirmed that he remains completely serious about wanting to work on Scalebound again. He noted that company President and CEO Kento Koyama is also fully on board with the idea. When asked if they had formally approached Asha Sharma about reviving the game, Kamiya admitted they had not yet asked, but used the opportunity to publicly declare that if Xbox wants to do it, they are ready to make it happen.

Kamiya emphasized that he has recently spoken with several individuals who worked on the original project. While acknowledging that it is unfortunate the game never saw the light of day, he stated that he very strongly desires to see the project through if possible, describing himself as one hundred percent serious. Although acknowledging that they might not be in a position to resume development immediately, Kamiya expressed his belief that persistent desire can eventually find a way to make things happen.

Microsoft never provided a comprehensive public explanation when Scalebound was cancelled, though various past statements from employees pointed to multiple development challenges. Because Xbox is believed to still own the intellectual property rights to Scalebound, any potential revival would require Microsoft to initiate contact and propose moving forward with the developers, leaving the ultimate decision in the hands of the new leadership team.
