Resident Evil producer Jun Takeuchi has offered an explanation for Resident Evil Requiem's title that extends beyond its musical meaning. In an interview published in the Biohazard 30th Anniversary Special, Takeuchi revealed the title's wordplay construction.
"'Requiem' isn't just a title chosen for its meaning of 'requiem,'" Takeuchi said via GamesRadar. "The spelling of Requiem (REQUIEM) contains not only the 'RE (response)' but also a 'Q (question).' In other words, this 'Requiem' presents both an 'answer' and a 'question.' I will explain the meaning of that at some point in the future."
Beyond the title's construction, Takeuchi indicated that Capcom has been laying groundwork for a larger crossover between the remake series and mainline numbered titles. "Currently, Resident Evil operates on a two-pronged approach: The numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing drama of the series, while the remake series lets them experience the past," he explained. "Eventually, the remake series will catch up to the era of the numbered titles, and the mechanisms for that are already being considered."
Takeuchi stated that preparations for this convergence have been underway since Resident Evil Village, with returning elements like Umbrella, Spencer, and Raccoon City appearing in Requiem as part of the setup. He did not clarify what form the crossover will take or its timeline. Requiem already bridged both eras by pairing classic protagonist Leon S. Kennedy with new heroine Grace Ashcroft.
The next confirmed Resident Evil project is a remake of Code: Veronica, currently without a release date. The recent Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger has earned $208.3 million worldwide.
