Pokémon Champions’ Director Vows to Keep Turn-Based Battles as Single-Player is Ruled Out
Co-director Masaaki Hoshino has confirmed that Pokémon Champions will preserve traditional turn-based combat forever, while also addressing why the PvP spin-off will not feature single-player modes.
As the Pokémon franchise continues to experiment with alternative combat styles in titles like Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the developers behind the competitive spin-off Pokémon Champions have committed to keeping traditional turn-based mechanics alive. While main generational releases and remakes like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet alongside Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have largely stuck to the classic format, remarks from leadership have hinted at future changes for main series entries.
Co-director Kazumasa Iwao recently suggested that main series battle rules could potentially change over time as Game Freak challenges itself with new concepts. However, fellow co-director Masaaki Hoshino has stepped forward to reassure fans of traditional combat. In an interview with VGC, Hoshino expressed his lifelong love for Pokémon battles and stated that turn-based mechanics will be permanently preserved as long as Pokémon Champions remains active, regardless of what other battle styles emerge in the broader franchise.
Hoshino emphasized that the team plans to keep Pokémon Champions operating far into the future—essentially forever, matching the lifespan of the Pokémon series itself. Serving as the official platform where official Video Game Championships (VGC) tournaments take place at events such as the Pokémon World Championships, the game functions as a core pillar of the competitive scene.
Alongside discussions surrounding its combat system, Hoshino also addressed the absence of single-player content. Currently available across Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, Pokémon Champions is strictly focused on multiplayer action and is explicitly intended to serve as the series' dedicated competitive battler for the foreseeable future. Despite interest from players hoping to see the title expand with standalone single-player modes, the development team has no plans to introduce such features.
