PlayVS Restores Scholastic Esports Competition Fees, Ending Free Model
Scholastic esports platform PlayVS announced it has reorganized and secured new financing, ending its free-to-schools model by restoring annual competition fees of $595 for high schools and $495 for middle schools.

Scholastic esports platform PlayVS announced that it has reorganized, secured full financing, and restored competition fees to its school programs. This change ends the free-to-schools model that the company adopted in November 2023. In an update addressed to its community, the company stated that it encountered significant operational and financial challenges earlier in the year. To address these issues, PlayVS substantially reduced costs, streamlined operations, and pursued new financing.
The company explained that the no-cost model was unsustainable for providing reliable technology, league operations, and customer support. Under the new terms for the 2026-2027 school year, high schools will pay $595 and middle schools will pay $495 for the full school year. This fee covers unlimited titles, teams, and players across every season the school enters, alongside a $100 early-bird discount for payments made before September 4. The previous free model had replaced a per-student charge of around $80 per student, per season.
Alongside the fee structure change, PlayVS introduced a new leadership team. Jonathan Boswell took over as chief executive officer, Juanita Russell joined as chief financial officer, and Charles O'Donnell was named chief revenue officer. Former chief executive Jon Chapman, who previously built the free sponsorship-funded model, has left the company. PlayVS confirmed to Esports Radar that it also made a workforce reduction over the course of 2026, has begun rehiring, and has paused the Madden NFL Youth Championship that it originally launched in 2024.
