Scholastic Esports Firm PlayVS Secures New Financing and Names Executive Team
PlayVS has completed a major reorganization, secured fresh financing, and appointed a new leadership team that includes Jonathan Boswell as CEO.

Scholastic and collegiate gaming platform PlayVS has completed a major reorganization, securing new financing after facing financial and operational challenges earlier this year. To stabilize the business, the company reduced its costs, streamlined operations, and pursued fresh funding. PlayVS announced that it is fully financed and prepared to serve students, coaches, and schools over the long term.
As part of the restructuring, PlayVS introduced a new executive leadership team. Jonathan Boswell has stepped into the role of chief executive officer after serving as chief technology officer since January 2025. Boswell brings 23 years of experience to the position. Juanita Russell continues her role as chief financial officer, which she began in January 2026. Charles O’Donnell, who joined the company in April 2025 through the acquisition of Playfly Sports' esports division, is now the chief revenue officer. Former CEO Jon Chapman has left the company.
PlayVS noted that its previous no-cost model proved unsustainable for delivering reliable technology, league operations, and customer support. The company has restored competition fees to its scholastic programs and is working closely with state associations. Moving forward, PlayVS intends to connect gaming competitions with curricula, college opportunities, and career readiness initiatives for middle school through college students.
