Pico’s Vision Pro Competitor Delayed Amid Cancelled September Reveal

ByteDance subsidiary Pico has announced a delay for its upcoming flagship standalone extended reality (XR) headset, previously teased earlier in the year under the codename 'Project Swan' and recently named the Pico Space Pro. Originally scheduled for a major product launch event in Beijing on September 2nd, the company has called off the event and pushed the product's release window to the fourth quarter. According to Pico, the postponement is necessary to allow more time for a major upgrade to the software experience.

In an official statement translated from the original Chinese, Pico explained that while the hardware and software had reached a high level of completion during final verification, the team identified an exciting new opportunity they wanted to incorporate into the initial release. Consequently, the company decided to invest extra time into refining the software experience. To help bridge the gap and gather feedback, Pico plans to expand its 'Pioneer Experience Program' in the coming months to invite more users for early testing, alongside its ongoing 'Global Early Access Program' closed beta test which sends pre-production units and software to applicants.

As Pico's next major flagship device, the Pico Space Pro has been slated with notable technical specifications, including microOLED displays featuring 4,000 pixels per inch, an average of approximately 40 pixels per degree, and a dual-chip architecture combining a custom XR perception and imaging silicon alongside a separate flagship system-on-chip. The headset is positioned to compete against premium prosumer and enterprise devices such as Apple's Vision Pro and Samsung's Galaxy XR headset.
