PC Gamer's price-to-weight analysis crowns the Glorious Model O Eternal as the best value gaming mouse
A deep dive into gaming mouse value using a custom scoring system combining price-to-weight ratio, review scores, and quality finds budget options offer the best bang for buck.

A gaming mouse's price tag doesn't tell the whole story. PC Gamer's hardware team applied a supermarket pricing trick to gaming mice: measuring value by price-to-gram ratio rather than absolute cost. The experiment revealed something surprising about what gamers should actually prioritize when shopping for a new mouse.
The analysis used a custom scoring system called the "James score," which combines three metrics. First, it calculates the price-to-weight ratio by dividing the MSRP by the mouse's weight in grams, then ranks each mouse on a percentile scale from 0 to 100%. Second, it factors in PC Gamer's own review scores. These two values are then averaged together to produce a final ranking.
The methodology accounts for weight variations between color variants by using the lightest available option. Mice included in the analysis were limited to models PC Gamer has reviewed, ensuring quality assessments could be applied consistently across the entire dataset.
The Glorious Model O Eternal topped the rankings with the best overall score. The mouse delivers strong performance relative to its modest price, making it an efficient choice for players watching their budget. PC Gamer's analysis noted the recommendation aligns with recent suggestions for budget-friendly gaming mice.
The 8BitDo Retro R8 placed second, which the author noted is the actual mouse on their desk. Two Mchose models tied for third place. The top performers share a common trait: they're all solidly built budget options rather than premium ultralight mice.
The analysis reveals a counterintuitive finding. While many modern gamers chase the lightest possible mouse and willingly pay premium prices for it, the data suggests that mid-range budget mice offer superior value when you factor in both cost and build quality. The price-to-weight ratio, while unusual as a shopping metric, inadvertently highlights how well budget mice balance performance and affordability compared to their more expensive counterparts.
