SD card prices surge for Nintendo Switch as AI data centers strain memory supply

Storage expansion for Nintendo Switch has become significantly more expensive in recent months. microSD card prices have risen due to memory-hungry AI data centers purchasing most of the available flash memory supply directly from manufacturers, leaving limited inventory for consumer markets.

According to Nintendo Everything, the price surge is substantial. A 1 TB microSD card now costs around $200, while 2 TB options exceed $300. These costs represent a major jump from earlier pricing, when even 1 TB cards were considered affordable. The original Nintendo Switch requires an SD card for any meaningful game downloads, making this price increase a real concern for players looking to expand their storage capacity.

The situation differs between Switch models. Standard Nintendo Switch games typically require less storage space than Switch 2 titles, so owners of the original console may manage with smaller cards. Nintendo Everything recommends a Samsung 512 GB microSD card as a practical balance between storage capacity and current pricing for Switch owners.

When purchasing microSD cards, sticking to established brands is essential. Recommended manufacturers include SanDisk, Samsung, and Lexar. Off-brand products should be avoided regardless of price savings.

Players can offset storage limitations through strategic purchasing decisions. Games requiring substantial space, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, are better bought as physical cartridges rather than downloaded digitally. This approach preserves SD card space for smaller titles and digital-only releases. Many Switch games occupy less than 10 GB, and players can delete and redownload games as needed if storage becomes limited.
