Fable has persisted through a 10-year development cycle partly because Xbox leadership views it as fundamental to the platform, according to Playground Games co-founder and Fable game director Ralph Fulton.

Speaking to The Guardian, Fulton explained: "I genuinely think Fable is an important game. What has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform." He added: "I would go a step further and say it's important to video games as a whole. It offers a combination of elements that simply doesn't exist anywhere else."

The game was announced in 2020, but the development contract was signed in 2017, meaning the project will have taken a decade from inception to launch in early 2027. Such extended timelines have proved risky for Microsoft in the past. Games like Everwild and Perfect Dark were ultimately cancelled after years in development despite showing potential.

Playground Games' track record with the Forza Horizon series has likely bolstered confidence in the studio's ability to deliver. The developer's reputation appears to have contributed to keeping Fable funded through its prolonged development.

Based on available gameplay footage, Fable demonstrates a blend of fantasy RPG mechanics that differentiate it from existing competitors. The game offers customizable difficulty settings and reportedly takes around 20 hours to complete. Fulton had originally planned an October 2026 release but indicated the team is pleased with the delay to early 2027.
