Fable reboot team built entirely around love of original trilogy, says director

Playground Games assembled its Fable development team by hiring passionate fans of the classic RPG series. Director Ralph Fulton says every team member prioritizes the franchise's legacy.

Playground Games built its Fable reboot team around a shared passion for the original trilogy. Game director Ralph Fulton told the Future Games Show that developer recruitment focused on finding fans of the series rather than experienced reboot staff.

"Every single member of the team is first and foremost a Fable fan," Fulton said. He noted that many developers relocated to Warwickshire, England specifically to work on the project. "Each and every one of them came here because they're a Fable fan. They love the series, they want to bring it back."

Fulton emphasized that shared fandom shaped the team's priorities from day one. "Everyone's first day at the studio, something that they had in common with everyone else was that they were here to make a great Fable game, and I think that you can feel that from the game that they've made."

This approach appears to influence the studio's specific design choices. Fulton previously noted the team's confidence in the reboot's ending partly stems from knowing how poorly Fable 2's conclusion was received by fans. The developer framing suggests lessons from the original trilogy directly informed the new game's direction.

Fable represents Playground Games' first project outside racing games. The reboot was announced over six years ago and has generated significant anticipation. Fulton added that Xbox leadership views Fable as "vital to the DNA of the platform," a commitment that shielded the project during the company's recent layoff cycle.
